This 8.97-acre Bronx park is named for the explorer whose ship, the Half Moon, anchored in New York Harbor in 1609. Its monument was begun for the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration: the 100-foot Doric column went up by 1912, but the statue waited until Robert Moses revived the project and it was dedicated on January 6, 1938. Karl Gruppe finished the 16-foot figure from his teacher Karl Bitter's model and added two bronze reliefs at the base. The south half of the park has ball courts and playgrounds.
