About Saint Paul's Church National Historic Site

Saint Paul's Church sits in Mount Vernon, about 20 miles north of New York City. Its congregation dates to the colonial period, and local residents gathered nearby to vote and drill with the militia. During the Revolution, American, British and Hessian troops dismantled the earlier wooden meetinghouse for its timber, and they used the unfinished stone chapel as a hospital. The surrounding cemetery holds a large number of burials, and the site also honors Rebecca Turner, a former enslaved person who attended the church and is buried there. The church and cemetery became a national historic site in 1978 to protect them from nearby industrial growth.
