About Icelandic State Park
Icelandic State Park sits on the shore of Lake Renwick and was established in 1964 to preserve the story of early homesteading in North Dakota. Visitors can tour restored historic buildings such as Akra Community Hall and Hallson Church, and can visit the Pioneer Heritage Center, which hosts exhibits and programs on the state's settlement years. A public library on site holds local and family history resources. Summer visitors can boat, swim, and fish, while winter visitors often snowshoe and cross-country ski. Shaded picnic areas beneath old oak trees are available. Nearby, the Gunlogson Nature Preserve, the state's first dedicated nature preserve, offers woodland trails along the Tongue River that pass through habitat for rare plants and birds.
