About Irish Famine Memorial

The Irish Famine Memorial, also called An Gorta Mor or the Irish Famine Monument, stands on Cambridge Common near Harvard Square. Maurice Harron created the sculpture, which shows a family being separated during the Great Hunger. It was dedicated to the President of Ireland on the 150th anniversary of 1847, the darkest year of the famine. An inscription on its base states a message against letting people starve when food is plentiful.
