About James A. Garfield National Historic Site

Garfield bought this Mentor farmhouse in 1876, and in 1880 he greeted thousands of visitors from its porch in the first successful front porch campaign for president. After his assassination in 1881, his widow Lucretia added a memorial library wing, the first presidential library. A six-year restoration finished in 1998, and over 80 percent of the Victorian furniture inside belonged to the Garfields. Guided house tours start from the visitor center. Entry and parking are free.
