Iowa's second state park, dedicated in 1920, covers oak-hickory bluffs and valleys along the Des Moines River. Visitors can hike about 13 miles of trails, fish at the lake or river, swim at a sandy beach, and stay in family cabins or a campground. The park was a river crossing on a mid-19th-century Mormon trek, and many of its buildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Woodland-era burial mounds overlook the river and should be left undisturbed.
