The Mead holds Amherst College's art collection, more than 20,000 objects spanning thousands of years, in a building next to Stearns Steeple that opened in 1949. Two installations stay put: carved wall reliefs from the palace of Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud and a 17th-century English paneled room. Other galleries rotate shows, including Russian art from the Thomas P. Whitney collection. Admission is free. On weekdays most campus parking needs a permit, so use the Dickinson Lot or town spaces.
