The Mercer Museum was built to display the large collection of household and craft objects gathered by archaeologist Henry Chapman Mercer. It shows everyday life before industrialization, with more than 60 early American trades represented. The museum is run by the Bucks County Historical Society and shares a campus with the Research Library and Fonthill Castle, Mercer's former home. Visitors can also see some of the oldest pieces in the collection, including a whale oil lamp about 2,000 years old and Native American tools dating to 6,000 to 8,000 BC.
