This National Park Service site preserves ground along the Monocacy River where Confederate forces tried to reach the nation's capital during the summer of 1864. Union troops, facing much larger numbers, held their position on July 9 to give reinforcements time to reach Washington. Visitors can see the Worthington House, a late 1700s home that stands among the park's best-known spots, along with a monument honoring the Monocacy Regiment. The park also offers a self-guided auto tour, several walking trails, and living history demonstrations. Seasonal events and commemorations add to the visit.
