Mounds State Park sits off I-69 east of Anderson and preserves ten earthworks raised by prehistoric Adena-Hopewell peoples. The largest, the Great Mound, is thought to date to roughly 160 B.C. Surveys suggest the mounds served as gathering places for ceremonies and as spots for observing astronomical alignments. A nature center offers wildlife viewing, animal displays, and interactive games. Naturalist-led hikes and programs run on weekends year-round, and several trails of varying difficulty wind through the woods and along the White River bluffs.
