244 Central St, Saugus, MA 01906 · Saugus, MA
This National Park Service site on the Saugus River preserves the story of early iron production in the English colonies. Visitors can see working waterwheels, forges, and mills, along with a historic 17th-century home and a green river basin across roughly twelve acres. The blast furnace turned bog ore into cast iron bars, and the forge then converted those bars into iron that a blacksmith could work. The reconstructed buildings date to the ironworks founded by John Winthrop the Younger, which operated from 1646 to about 1670.
