Sherwood Island State Park sits on the Long Island Sound shoreline in Westport. Visitors come to swim, fish from jetties, play disc golf on two courses, fly model airplanes, and comb the shore for shells along the long beach. The park is split into sections, with the 9/11 Living Memorial on Sherwood Point, a nature center on the east side, and forested trails and a second bathhouse on the west side. Its history includes a long fight to open the shoreline to the public after the state first bought land in 1914.
