Long Island Sound shoreline park in Milford with a boardwalk, dunes, restored marsh, and a tidal sandbar to Charles Island.
1 Silver Sands Parkway, Milford, CT 06460 · Milford, CT
Silver Sands State Park sits on the Long Island Sound shore in Milford and includes beach, dunes, restored tidal marsh, and woods. Visitors can walk a long boardwalk, wade in tidal pools, search for seashells, and fish from the shore. At low tide a sandbar links the park to Charles Island, a small bird sanctuary that is closed to human visitors. The island is also a regular stop for birdwatchers, who come to see many migrating and nesting species. The state assembled the land after a 1955 hurricane destroyed homes along the coast, and remnants of old cottage foundations can still be seen in the marsh. Tides rise quickly here, so the sandbar crossing can be dangerous and should be checked before going out.
