The Smart Museum is the University of Chicago's art museum, in Hyde Park about 7.5 miles south of the Loop. Its collection holds more than 17,000 objects, from Chinese scroll paintings and Buddhist sculpture to works by Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell and Diego Rivera. One highlight is the original dining room furniture Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the nearby Robie House. Admission is always free, and the museum sometimes closes between exhibitions and over a winter recess.
