About Steuben Memorial State Historic Site

This 53-acre site in the hills above Remsen holds the grave of Baron von Steuben, the Prussian officer who trained the Continental Army at Valley Forge and wrote its first drill manual, known as the Blue Book. New York granted him 16,000 acres here in 1786, and he died in 1794. His grave lies in the Sacred Grove under an 1870 monument, and a 1937 replica of his two-room log house serves as the visitor center. Admission is free, and the site is run with the National Park Service at Fort Stanwix.
