About Fort Stanwix National Monument

The British built Fort Stanwix in 1758 to guard the Oneida Carry, a portage between Lake Ontario and the Hudson River route. American troops rebuilt it and held out against a British siege in August 1777, which helped lead to the British defeat in the Saratoga campaign. The National Park Service has reconstructed the fort on its original site in downtown Rome, and three short trails circle it, one along part of the Oneida Carry. The Marinus Willett Center shows exhibits on the fort and the Mohawk Valley. No entrance pass is needed.
