About Swope Art Museum

The Sheldon Swope Art Museum sits in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana, near the Crossroads of America. Its permanent collection holds nearly 2,500 American works spanning the 19th century to the present, and rotating shows draw from periods such as 1930s and 1940s American Scene painting, Indiana art, and postwar figurative and abstract work. The museum was funded by a bequest from a Civil War veteran and jeweler and opened to the public in 1942. It also runs exhibitions, programs, and audio tours through Bloomberg Connects.
