Theodore Roosevelt Island is a memorial island in the Potomac River. In the 1930s, landscape designers reshaped former farmland into a woodland meant to resemble the forest that once covered the site. Visitors can walk miles of trails crossing upland forest and wet lowland areas. The island also honors Theodore Roosevelt's love of the outdoors and his work protecting natural resources. Its history includes a Civil War-era training camp for United States Colored Troops and several earlier names.
