About Lady Bird Johnson Park

Lady Bird Johnson Park is a unit of the George Washington Memorial Parkway occupying an island in the Potomac River. Renamed in 1968 for Claudia Johnson, the former first lady and conservation advocate, the island was formerly called Columbia Island. Its plantings are famous for daffodils and tulips each spring and colorful hardwood trees each autumn. Visitors find the LBJ Memorial Grove, the Navy and Merchant Marine Memorial, picnic tables, short trails, and a marina with a restaurant. The Mount Vernon Trail runs the length of the island, and views across the river take in famous Washington landmarks.
