A Texas Historical Commission site outside West Columbia that traces plantation life, ranching, and oil history, and the family of Governor James S. Hogg.
1702 N. 13th St., West Columbia, TX 77486 · West Columbia, TX
Run by the Texas Historical Commission in Brazoria County, this site preserves the homestead that Martin Varner established after receiving a land grant in 1824. Over its long history it saw sugarcane farming, cattle ranching, and oil drilling, and it passed through the hands of the Varner, Patton, and Hogg families. The site presents the stories of both enslaved and free families who helped shape the area. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the grounds, which include former sugar mill ruins, a barn, a cottage, pecan orchards, and a family cemetery. The museum store sits inside the visitor center. Check ahead, because the plantation house was scheduled to close for maintenance starting November 2.
