The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational chapel in Houston founded by John and Dominique de Menil. Its interior doubles as the display setting for a major modern art work: fourteen Mark Rothko paintings in varying dark hues. The building's octagon-within-a-Greek-cross plan was shaped largely by the artist. Visitors can meditate, view the art, or sit quietly, and the surrounding grounds are open for reflection. The chapel sits in the Montrose neighborhood, between the Menil Collection building and the Chapel of Saint Basil on the University of St. Thomas campus. Roughly 110,000 people visit each year.
