Walnut Woods State Park sits near Iowa's capital and protects a bottomland forest along the Raccoon River. Visitors can hike more than two miles of mostly flat natural-surface trails, watch birds from an observation station, fish from the bank or launch a boat at the west end, and camp in a shaded campground with electric sites. The park's 1930s lodge, built during the Civilian Conservation Corps era, can be reserved for gatherings and has indoor and outdoor fireplaces. A pedestrian bridge crosses to Raccoon River Park, and the Purple Martin Water Resource Area nearby offers canoe launching and martin viewing.
