About Alamance Battleground

This state historic site preserves the ground where an armed group of backcountry farmers, known as Regulators, faced off against the militia of royal governor William Tryon in 1771. The farmers had grown angry over high land costs, misused tax money, and close ties between creditors and local officials. After their petitions and peaceful efforts went unanswered, frustration turned to violence, and their defeat at Alamance ended the movement. On the grounds stands the Allen House, a log home typical of Piedmont farm families.
