Town Creek Indian Mound is a ceremonial center the Pee Dee people used from about 1150 to 1400, on a bluff where Town Creek meets the Little River. Archaeologists dug here from 1937 into the 1980s, and the state rebuilt the 15-foot platform mound with a temple on top, a smaller temple, a mortuary house and the wooden palisade. It is the only National Historic Landmark in North Carolina honoring American Indian culture. Admission is free, and you tour the mound and village on your own; restrooms are available.
