Stagville was the center of a plantation complex of about 30,000 acres where almost 900 people were enslaved in 1860. The state historic site keeps the Bennehan family house from about 1799, a great barn from 1860 and the Horton Grove quarters of about 1851, the only two-story slave quarters left in North Carolina. Admission and the outdoor self-guided tour are free, and guided tours cost $2. Guided tours run at 1 and 3 p.m. on weekdays and at 11, 1 and 3 on Saturdays.
