Start a walk or bike ride on the Hop River rail trail through a lit 400-foot tunnel, or scramble among the rocks and small caves of the notch.
Junction of Route 44 and Route 6, Bolton, CT · Bolton, CT
Bolton Notch State Park covers 95 acres where Route 44 meets Route 6, in a rocky gap that railroads used from the 1850s to the 1950s. Today it is the Bolton trailhead for the Hop River State Park Trail, a former rail line that runs more than 20 miles east through quiet countryside, and the Shenipsit Trail also crosses it. Inside the park the rail trail passes through a 400-foot tunnel that now has lighting. The rocks draw climbers, and there are several caves big enough to crawl into.
