About Penwood State Park

Penwood State Park sits on Talcott Mountain in Bloomfield, about twenty minutes from Hartford. Its nearly 800 acres are linked to neighboring Talcott Mountain State Park across the road. A section of the Metacomet Blue Blazed Trail runs through the park. A wooded ridge on the western side offers wide views over the Farmington River Valley, especially striking in autumn. Spring brings wildflowers across the forest floor, and visitors may spot woodland birds such as woodpeckers, vultures, and eagles. Industrialist Curtis Veeder gave the land to Connecticut in 1944 and asked that it stay natural. Ground fires, horseback riding, and camping are not allowed. A rentable open-air picnic shelter is available.
