A paved 4.5-mile trail on a historic canal towpath beside the Connecticut River.
Canal Rd., Suffield, CT 06078 · Suffield, CT
This state park follows the towpath of a canal that is more than 170 years old. Its paved surface sits on the path where animals once pulled freight barges along the waterway. Visitors get many scenic views of the Connecticut River and the old canal. Railroads eventually ended freight traffic, and factories once lined the banks for water power. Today the public uses the trail most for recreation, with biking, fishing, hiking, and picnicking among the main activities.
