1801 E St SE, Washington, DC 20003 · Washington, DC
Set on Capitol Hill along the Anacostia River, this 35-acre cemetery began as the Washington Parish Burial Ground and became an early national cemetery as Congress bought plots and buried civil servants. Its grounds hold many notable Americans, and the site remains open for new burials. The nonprofit association that runs it works to preserve the landscape, and volunteers help with its upkeep. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 2011.
