About Emancipation Memorial

This bronze of Abraham Lincoln holding the Emancipation Proclamation over a kneeling freed man stands in Lincoln Park, east of the Capitol on Capitol Hill. Freed slaves raised the money, starting with a $5 gift from Charlotte Scott of Virginia. Frederick Douglass spoke at the dedication on April 14, 1876, and later criticized the design, a debate that continues today. In 1974 the statue was turned to face the Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial across the park.
