About Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site

This Georgia state historic site protects a 54-acre landscape where Mississippian culture people lived, worshipped, farmed, fished, and traded from about 1000 to 1550 CE. Visitors can see six earthen mounds, a plaza, a village area, and a defensive ditch. The tallest mound, a 63-foot knoll, is thought to have supported the home of a priest-chief, while another mound held burials of elite individuals dressed in elaborate clothing. A nature trail runs along the river and shows a V-shaped fish trap and plants that the early residents used for food and medicine. A museum is on site, though the park advises checking its notices on repatriation efforts and renovations before visiting.
