About Fort Harrison National Cemetery

This small national cemetery in Henrico County sits about seven miles south of Richmond and grew out of Civil War fighting around Richmond in 1864 and 1865. Union forces seized the nearby Confederate stronghold in September 1864, and after the war a site close to the fort was set aside for burials. Many of the graves hold Union soldiers who fell on nearby battlefields, and most of the dead remain unidentified. The walled grounds include a Victorian stone lodge, and the cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can view interpretive waysides about the site, and the cemetery follows detailed rules for flowers, flags, and other items placed at graves.
