Fort Smallwood Park covers about 100 acres at the tip of a peninsula in Anne Arundel County where the Patapsco River meets the Chesapeake Bay. It was a coastal defense fort used from 1890 to 1927, and the concrete Battery Hartshorne and old barracks still stand. Today it has a swimming beach, the 380-foot Bill Burton Fishing Pier, a boat ramp, walking trails, a pond, a playground and the historic Cedar Pavilion. Entry is $8 per vehicle, and the pier looks across the water toward the old Sparrows Point steel plant.
