Freedom Park is a 98-acre park between the Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods, about 3 miles from Uptown Charlotte, built after World War II to honor veterans. It centers on a 7-acre lake with paved trails, plus tennis and volleyball courts, sports fields and playgrounds. A fenced 2-8-0 steam locomotive still lets visitors walk into the cab. Free films and concerts run in summer, and each September the five-day Festival in the Park draws more than 100,000 people. The Charlotte Nature Museum is next door.
