This Masonic building and memorial stands in Alexandria, just outside Washington, D.C., and is dedicated to the first U.S. president, who also served as a lodge leader. Its tall tower draws its design from an ancient lighthouse in Italy. Building started in the 1920s, the structure opened in 1932, and its interior was finished much later, around 1970. Visitors can join guided tours, which the official site schedules on specific days of the week. The memorial was named a National Historic Landmark in 2015 for its architecture and its status as one of the largest private memorials to Washington.
