The Lyceum was built in 1839 by the Lyceum Company and the Alexandria Library Company as a place for education and public gatherings. Its first floor held a library and reading room, while the second floor hall hosted lectures, debates, concerts, and meetings. During the Civil War it served as a military hospital and troop quarters, and later it became a private home, an office building, and a chamber of commerce site. Today it operates as a museum with exhibits on Alexandria's past, public programs, a museum store, and rentable spaces.
