About Freedom House Museum

The Freedom House Museum occupies 1315 Duke Street, the office of Franklin and Armfield, which became the largest slave-trading firm in the United States after 1828. From 1828 to 1861 traders used the building and its pens to ship thousands of enslaved Black men, women and children south to Natchez and New Orleans. It is a National Historic Landmark, and the City of Alexandria bought it in 2020 and reopened it as a museum in 2022. Its exhibits tell the story of Black life in Alexandria and the nation, and the outside was restored to its Federal-era look in 2025. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5 to 12.
