Grand Isle State Park sits on South Hero Island in Lake Champlain, the largest island in the lake. The park is a camping-only park, with 115 tent/RV sites, 36 lean-to sites, and 4 cabins. Visitors can swim and fish from the shore, launch boats as registered campers, rent kayaks at the park office, and rent bicycles. An easy nature trail, volleyball, horseshoes, and nature programs run by a park interpreter are also available. The park opened in 1959 on land once part of a private summer resort, and the Nature Center is the only remaining resort building.
