Great River Bluffs State Park protects steep bluffs that rise about 500 feet above the Mississippi River southeast of Winona, in the unglaciated Driftless Area. Roads and trails follow the ridgetops, so walks are fairly level. The King's Bluff Nature Trail heads out onto a bluff, and short spur trails reach views of the river and the Wisconsin shore and of goat prairies, rare grasslands on slopes of 40 to 50 degrees. The park has a shaded picnic area, a 31-site campground with showers, a cart-in tent camp and a bike-in camp near the Great River Road. A one-day Minnesota state park vehicle permit costs $7.
