About Hopeville Pond State Park

Hopeville Pond State Park sits on the shore of a freshwater reservoir in Griswold, created by damming the Pachaug River. The park is best known for fishing, a tradition that dates back to the Mohegan people, who built stone weirs to catch eels and other fish. Visitors can also paddle or boat on the pond, swim at the beach, camp in a wooded campground with an 80-site area and a rustic cabin, rent an open-air picnic shelter, or hike and bike the trails. Local history includes a former woolen mill industry and the site of the lost village of Hopeville. The park manager's house, the Avery House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Alcohol is prohibited at the park.
