About Hungry Mother State Park

Set in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, this state park is built around a placid 108-acre lake. Visitors can swim at a guarded beach during summer, rent paddleboats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, or fish from a universally accessible pier. Hiking and biking trails cover more than 17 miles and stay open year-round. Overnight options include cabins, a six-bedroom lodge, yurts, and campgrounds. The park was one of the original six Virginia state parks, developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
