The Japanese Garden sits within Hermann Park's historic landscape in Houston. Japanese landscape architect Ken Nakajima designed it, and it opened in 1992 to celebrate ties between Japan and the United States and to honor Houston's Japanese community. Visitors find carefully composed views, stone paths, traditional plantings, and water features. A partnership among the City of Houston, the Hermann Park Conservancy, and an advisory committee has cared for the garden for decades, with Japanese master gardeners visiting each year. The Conservancy is now restoring the garden, guided by Hiroyuki Tsujii and the Conservancy's master plan designers, to renew existing areas, restore Nakajima's key features, and improve accessibility.
