About Old Schwamb Mill

The Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington, Massachusetts, occupies a mill site that the Mill's own pages describe as the oldest continuously operating mill site in the United States, with mills on the main building site since the late 1600s. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. After operating as a family picture frame business for 105 years, the building was turned into a living history museum. Visitors can take guided tours, view art exhibitions, and watch artisans turn frames on original 19th-century elliptical lathes, which are still used to make custom oval and circular frames.
