About Patuxent River State Park

This state park covers the upper stretch of the Patuxent River across Howard and Montgomery counties. Its acreage combines natural areas with farmland that the Maryland Park Service leases to farmers for short-term crop use. Visitors mostly come to hunt, fish, hike, or ride horses. A catch-and-release trout stream runs through the park, and some sections are designated for hunting. Marked trails exist in a southern and a central area, while many other routes are unmarked social trails maintained by no one, so visitors should use them carefully. The Maryland Park Service does not rent horses. The park's headquarters and nature center sit near Brookeville.
