Peace Circle, where Pennsylvania Avenue and First Street NW meet · Washington, DC
The Peace Monument sits in a traffic circle west of the U.S. Capitol, where Pennsylvania Avenue meets First Street. Its white marble figures include Grief, History, Victory, and Peace, with symbols of war, the sea, and civilization carved below them. Sculptor Franklin Simmons created it in Rome, and Admiral David D. Porter, who had led Civil War naval forces, conceived and funded it. The monument was erected in 1877 and completed in early 1878. Later restorations addressed acid rain and pollution damage to the Carrara marble. It is also called the Naval Monument or Navy Monument.
