Large bronze and marble memorial to Civil War general and president Ulysses S. Grant, set at the foot of Capitol Hill.
Washington, DC
Sited in Union Square below the west front of the U.S. Capitol, this monument features an equestrian statue of Grant on a tall pedestal, flanked by groups of cavalry and artillery figures and four guardian lions. Sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady spent roughly two decades on the work, studying military drills and historical sources to achieve realistic detail. The memorial faces west across the Reflecting Pool toward the Lincoln Memorial, linking the general and his wartime president. The Architect of the Capitol now oversees its care, and recent conservation brought the bronze and marble back to their original detail.
