This coastal prairie site marks where Sam Houston's army, made up of settlers, Tejano fighters, and foreign volunteers, defeated a larger Mexican force in 1836. The battle lasted only about 18 minutes and secured Texas's independence. Visitors can drive a self-guided route across the roughly 1,200-acre grounds, hike, birdwatch, and fish. The San Jacinto Museum covers the revolution, and an elevator carries guests to the observation deck of the 567-foot monument.
