About Sterling Hill Mining Museum

Once one of the richest zinc ore deposits in the world, this former mine in Ogdensburg, New Jersey, now operates as a museum. The main guided tour takes visitors underground into the mine and through two museum galleries, where they can see mining machinery, a drilling and blasting demonstration, and the glowing Rainbow Tunnel. Visitors can also try mineral collecting on the mine dump, sluicing for minerals and fossils, and a gift shop and snack bar. The site is run by a nonprofit that aims to teach earth sciences, engineering, and the responsible use of nonrenewable resources. Groups, schools, and car clubs can book private tours.
