Read the names on 234 granite markers around a granite and steel tower with an eternal flame at New York City's only public Holocaust memorial park.
Emmons Avenue and Shore Boulevard, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY 11235 · Brooklyn, NY
This small city park sits at the water's edge in Sheepshead Bay, a neighborhood settled after World War II by many Holocaust survivors. Dedicated in 1986 and designed by landscape architect George Vellonakis, it centers on a 14.5-foot tower of granite and steel topped by a bronze eternal flame and ringed with the word Remember. A 21-foot granite slab tells the history of the Holocaust, and two gravel gardens hold 234 granite markers, shaped like broken tombstones, inscribed with names, places and events.
