Why you should go…
Duncan and Marjorie Phillips founded this museum in 1921 in the family's Georgian Revival house in Dupont Circle, and it calls itself America's first museum of modern art. The collection runs to nearly 3,000 works by impressionist and modern artists, including Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party, bought in 1923. The Rothko Room is the only installation of his paintings made in collaboration with the artist himself. There is a cafe and a shop on site.
